The Barons Dowding

The title of Baron Dowding of Bentley Priory in the County of Middlesex was created in 1943 for Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding. Hugh Dowding had selected the name because Fighter Command had been based at Bentley Priory from 1936.

1st Baron Dowding

On his death, title passed to his son, Derek (child of Hugh Dowding’s first marriage to Clarice Maud Vancourt). Hugh Dowding’s other two children were both stepchildren.

2nd Baron Dowding

Married Alison Margaret Bannerman – the couple had two sons, Piers and Mark.

3rd Baron Dowding (Current)

Married Noriko Shito – the couple have two daughters

The Heir Presumptive to the title is Mark Dennis Dowding (brother of the current Baron Dowding)
