Moffat Museum opens it’s doors for Spring/Summer 2025

Moffat Museum opens again this Friday (4th April), with a Special Exhibition ’80 Years On: Memories of the War Years in Moffat’. Volunteers have been researching and talking with local people to build a picture of what life would have been like in and around the town. With many soldiers, including commandos, billeted and training locally, Moffat was a busy and noisy place. Hundreds of children were evacuated from Glasgow and accommodated with local families. And, of course, everyone was navigating their way through blackouts, rationing and the uncertainties & fears brought about by war.

There is, of course, much more to see at the Museum with exhibits and information about Moffat’s history and heritage through time, including Merlin and the Dark Ages, Moffat’s History as a Spa Town and The Moffat Ravine Murders. With quizzes for younger people, there really is something for everyone and admission is Free!

The Museum is a charity, accredited by Museums & Galleries Scotland, and run wholly by Volunteers. Relying on its dedicated group of Volunteers to keep the Museum open for Visitors, it cannot open every day – so for 2025 it will be open Friday – Monday 10.30am-4.30pm (except Sunday 1.30pm-4.30pm).

Graeme Campbell (Chair of Trustees) says:

“We work really hard to maintain and develop the Museum. Preserving the history and heritage of Moffat and the surrounding area is so important, there’s a lot that we do “behind the scenes” that’s not about exhibitions and displays. And we love to welcome Visitors (local and from further afield) and share the information that we’ve collected.

But we can only continue to do this if we have Volunteers. This year we will not be open Tuesday- Thursday and this is linked directly to us having fewer Volunteers. So, if you want Moffat to continue to have an accessible, flourishing and well-regarded Museum then please consider volunteering and contact us.”
