Lord Hugh Dowding served in the Royal Air Force as an officer and air chief marshal. He significantly contributed to the defence of Great Britain during World War II and to the demise of Adolf Hitler’s invasion strategy. He assumed the presidency of NAVS (National Anti-Vivisection Society) subsequent to World War II and delivered numerous impassioned speeches in the House of Lords opposing animal experimentation. The Lord Dowding Fund for Humane Research was established in his honour in 1973. The 24th of April was subsequently designated as World Day for Laboratory Animals, coinciding with the birth date of Lord Dowding.
